The Bonfire Night and Guy Fawkes๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ’ฅ

On November 5, people across the UK will celebrate with bonfires, firework displays and sparklers.

But do you know why we celebrate it in the first place?

Here we look at the history behind the event.

Guy Fawkes. Whatโ€™s he got to do with it?

The main reason for Bonfire Night is that itโ€™s the anniversary of an attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

Commonly called the Gunpowder Plot, the conspirators are often mistaken as being led by Guy Fawkes. In reality, Fawkes was merely a henchman who was trusted with guarding the explosives.

When was the Gunpowder Plot?

The Gunpowder plot in 1605 was a plan to blow up King James I and his government. Fawkesโ€™ group put 36 barrels of explosive gunpowder in cellars under the Houses of Parliament.

Why was there a Gunpowder Plot?

In one of the first – and most notorious – acts of terrorism, Fawkes and his crew believed that England should return to the Catholic faith. By killing King James I and his supporters, they believed that England would cease to be a Protestant country.

What happened?

Fakes was caught guarding the gunpowder after the group behind the plot had their letters were intercepted. Luckily for King James, they reached the gunpowder before it was detonated on November 5.

Guy Fawkes was tried and executed a few months later.
